Barcelona moving permits: when to check authorisation

A practical guide to Barcelona moving permits: public-space occupation, vehicle loading, furniture lifts and applications.

CAMIONITO moving guide

Moving home in Barcelona is not the same as obtaining permission to use part of a public street for loading. Whether municipal authorisation is needed depends on the operation: where a vehicle will stop, whether parking must be reserved and whether an external furniture lift will occupy public space.

What the moving permit relates to

The city has a specific procedure for occupying public space during a move. The relevant issue is the use of the street or pavement, not merely changing your residential address.

You should check the requirements if you need to reserve spaces for a vehicle, use a mechanical platform from the street or affect pedestrian or vehicle movement. Different operations may follow different procedures.

Is a normal loading space enough?

A vehicle may sometimes be able to load from an authorised parking or delivery area while following posted restrictions and opening hours. This does not give permission to block a lane, place cones or install equipment in public space.

Before confirming the move, check the actual address, the legal loading point and the hours available. A free space outside the building is not a guaranteed loading reservation.

Moving with an external furniture lift

A lift may help when large furniture cannot safely pass through stairs or the internal lift. However, the façade, access point, pavement, traffic conditions and applicable permits must be assessed first.

Hiring a furniture lift does not guarantee that it can be installed at every address. If stairs or lifts are problematic, read our guide to moving without an elevator.

What information to gather

Prepare the origin and destination addresses, intended date, loading time window, vehicle type, approximate area to be used and whether any external equipment will be involved.

  • Check the loading arrangements at both addresses.
  • Ask each building about lift bookings and common areas.
  • Review the current municipal application instructions.
  • Confirm whether fees, advance notice or temporary signs apply.
  • Keep the authorisation and relevant payment documents.

Do not rely on a single deadline copied from an old guide; requirements can differ depending on the type of operation.

What if the move crosses a municipal boundary?

Moving between Barcelona and a neighbouring municipality may mean dealing with different authorities for the two loading points. Permission at one address does not automatically cover the other.

Ask the moving provider who will check and apply for any permits, whether that work is included and who is responsible for signage if it is required.

Requesting a realistic moving quote

Share photos of entrances, floor numbers, bulky items, access restrictions and your preferred schedule. This allows CAMIONITO to assess transport and loading assistance without promising parking or street occupation that has not been authorised.

Final checklist

  • Both loading points assessed.
  • Municipal requirements reviewed.
  • Vehicle, stairs and any furniture lift evaluated.
  • Building access and time window agreed.
  • Authorisation and signage instructions available where required.
  • Provider informed of all restrictions.

This is general planning information, not a substitute for the municipality's current decision. Always consult the official procedure for your specific circumstances.
